Chris Kluwe On Gay Marriage: “They Won’t Even Overthrow The Government In An Orgy Of Hedonistic Debauchery”

Chris Kluwe became an internet sensation, and the most famous NFL punter in America, practically overnight with an obscenity-laced and furious letter in support of gay marriage to a Maryland state representative.

Deadspin published the open letter, addressed to Emmett C. Burns, a Maryland legislator and minister. Burns himself wrote a letter to the owner of the Baltimore Ravens demanding that they silence linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo, who had publicly supported gay marriage.

I response, Kluwe let forth a torrent of criticism, ranging from Burns’ denial of free speech to his hypocrisy (as a black man and an official involved with government task forces on the legacy of slavery) for supporting a form of segregation and discrimination.

Getting the most attention is Kluwe’s defense of the institution of gay marriage and the civil rights of all Americans:

I can assure you that gay people getting married will have zero effect on your life. They won’t come into your house and steal your children. They won’t magically turn you into a lustful cockmonster. They won’t even overthrow the government in an orgy of hedonistic debauchery because all of a sudden they have the same legal rights as the other 90 percent of our population—rights like Social Security benefits, child care tax credits, Family and Medical Leave to take care of loved ones, and COBRA healthcare for spouses and children. You know what having these rights will make gays? Full-fledged American citizens just like everyone else, with the freedom to pursue happiness and all that entails. Do the civil-rights struggles of the past 200 years mean absolutely nothing to you?

Honestly, excerpting the letter doesn’t really do it justice. Kluwe might not be the most focused or civil writer, but every single sentence lands like a sledgehammer of humor and rage. Check out  the full text at the link above.
