How do you adapt a 500-page book about reincarnation, free will, and a few centuries of human experience (going into the future) for the big screen? Most people would say, “You don’t.”

But Andy and Lana Wachowski, the siblings behind The Matrix films, and Tom Tykwer, the director of the narrative-bending Run Lola Run, aren’t most people, or most filmmakers for that matter. With the help of an all-star cast led by Tom Hanks and Halle Berry, they eagerly tackled David Mitchell‘s bestseller Cloud Atlas. And according to The Hollywood Reporter, early signs say their efforts paid off, as the film earned an enthusiastic standing ovation at the Toronto Film Festival.

The article notes the film also features “Jim Broadbent, plus Hugh Grant, James D’Arcy, Jim Sturgess, Hugo Weaving, Ben Whishaw, Keith David, Xun Zhou and Doona Bae.”

Each actor portrays multiple characters, spanning centuries. They undergo drastic  transformations of their appearance, changing their age, race, and even gender; the internet is already buzzing with photo stills of Hanks in unusual, against-type looks.

The complex, multi-plot film might be hard to follow; but it any event, it should be visually stunning, and a great feat for the cast, designers, and all involved.

What do you think?

I think it looks really interesting but I feel like it is not the type of movie that will do very well at the box office.
