On Sunday, the 2012 NFL season kicked off with the San Francisco 49ers facing the Green Bay Packers in a showdown of what many agree are the two top teams in the NFC. In the end, the 49ers won an exciting battle 30-22 as they held off a late Packers rally.

But that wasn’t the biggest challenge the 49ers faced.

No, it wasn’t against Aaron Rodgers and the Cheeseheads at Lambeau Field. This battle featured the Niners and those pesky yellow uprights in the endzone. Sounds silly, right? But it wasn’t.

The first challenge was when the Niners figured that it would be fun to try what appeared to be a ridiculous 63-yard field goal at the end of the first half. Kicker David Akers had never made a field goal beyond 57 yards up to that point. So, why not give it a shot?

Well, this is what happened…

Yup, the kick bounced off of the crossbar, made a tremensous “doink” sound, and fell right to the other side of the uprights. It was good and the Niners were up 16-7 going into the half. As for David Akers…

That’s the face of a man who can’t believe that he just tied an NFL record for the longest field goal.

The field goal post would have the last say in this affair, however.

In the third quarter, Vernon Davis caught a 4-yard TD pass from Alex Smith. Afterwards, he paused and decided to challenge that poor field goal post that was just recently abused by Akers’ field goal. Davis opted to slam dunk the football like he was Tony Gonzalez. This time, the crossbar had other plans.

You can almost hear the uprights yell “Get that weak sh*t out of here!” as Davis got stuffed.

Now the series is even at 1-1. Until they meet again…
