The Best West Wing Reunion/PSA/Campaign Ad You’ll See This Week

It’s been six years since Aaron Sorkin‘s The West Wing went off the air, and we’ve had to make do with Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and The Newsroom since. But this week brought a breath of fresh air to fans of the walk-and-talk! Almost the entire original cast reunited for a campaign ad. No, not that campaign… a judicial election in Michigan?!

It turns out that Michigan State Supreme Court candidate Bridget Mary McCormack is the sister of actress Mary McCormack, who played Deputy NSA Kate Harper on the show. But even for a friend, it is impressive that the cast apparently did this for free, with their own time. (Unfortunately, no Charlie, no Sam… and where’s Mindy?)

In a very West Wing-ish twist, the campaign ad also tries to double as a non-partisan PSA. Candidate McCormick was lamenting to her sister that voter participation is a huge problem, as many don’t even realize that there is a separate, non-partisan section of the ballot. According to MichiganLive, voter participation in the state can drop off up to 39% from a presidential election to a nonpartisan one on the same ballot.

“It doesn’t even matter what side of the issue you’re on. More of us should participate. That’s really the only goal – it’s a real public education goal,” McCormack told the site.

I wonder if she knew she was echoing Will Bailey: “No matter who you vote for, make sure you vote.”

This is actually the second West Wing reunion PSA of the year. Several cast members got together a few months ago to make a Funny Or Die video promoting a national walking initiative. And that one featured Charlie and Ed (or Larry) to boot.
