How Silly Is The New Law That New Jersey Just Put Into Place That Asks People Not To Smile?

People in New Jersey smile. I know, I know. You’ve seen The Sopranos and read all about our crooked politicians, so it may come as a shock to you. But, I live in New Jersey and I’m here to tell you that people who live in this state do smile. They may not do it when they’re stuck in traffic on the New Jersey Turnpike or when they’re waiting in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles. But, trust me: They smile! And, they’re really smiling (and laughing!) about a new law that was just put into place this year.

The law I’m talking about is one that asks drivers not to smile in their driver’s license photos anymore. That’s right. As of January of this year, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission has asked people to refrain from smiling in their license photos because it apparently messes with the facial recognition system that they just put into place. If you do something like smile in your license photo, then the next time that you have your photo taken, it won’t recognize you if that smile is missing. So, they’ve actually told drivers not to smile anymore when they come to the DMV.

“If you’d like to smile, that’s great,” a spokesperson said recently. “What we’re asking people is to not smile as if they just won five million dollars in the lottery smile.”

Inteeeeeeeresting. Well, as someone who has gone to the DMV recently, I can tell you that they’re making that hard. It used to take three or four hours to get your license renewed. Now, you can be in and out of the DMV in less than an hour! So, what’s not to smile about?

In all seriousness, though, this is a silly law. Do I understand why it’s on the books? Of course. Identity theft is a huge problem in every state, and New Jersey is no different. But, the fact that my state had to make up a law for it is sort of ridiculous. I mean, people here do smile. But, trust me: They won’t have a problem knocking their smiles off their faces if you tell them to.
