It’s About Time! First Trailer For 42, The Jackie Robinson Movie

Jackie Robinson broke the Major League Baseball color barrier in 1947, and next year, his story will finally get a big screen rendering. The first trailer debuted this week, mixing Robinson’s post-war America with the throbbing beats of Jay-Z.

Robinson himself starred in a film version of his life in 1950- but that adaptation was roundly panned from a dramatic perspective. Andre Braugher starred as the legendary athlete in a TV movie in 1990- but that focused on his military service, where he also challenged racial boundaries. TV and theater veteran Chadwick Boseman will portray Robinson in this film. (I think it’s cool to have avoided a big name- or even a rapper making their acting debut- for the role.)

Harrison Ford is largely unrecognizable as Dodgers owner Branch Rickey, the man behind the push to break the color barrier. I’m excited to see how the experienced action star and leading man breaks into a historic drama role.

Writer-Director Brian Helgeland has bigger credits as a screenwriter (L.A. Confidential, Mystic River), but showed he could navigate action with Payback and A Knight’s Tale.

What do you think of the first look at 42?
