5 NFL Teams That Cannot Afford To Lose Today

Just prior to the start of Week 1 of the 2012-13 NFL season, we provided you with a list of five NFL teams that had to win their first game of the year in order to get off to a good start this season. Those teams were the Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions, New England Patriots, New York Jets, and Denver Broncos. Looking back, it’s a good thing that all five of them were able to win in Week 1. Otherwise, three of them—the Lions, Patriots, and Broncos—would be winless right now, and the other two would be a game under .500 and struggling to keep pace in their respective divisions.

Fast forward to Week 4 and there are five more teams that definitely need to win today. If they don’t, their seasons won’t be over. But, they’ll be putting themselves into a huge hole that they might not be able to climb out of anytime soon. So, with that in mind, here are the 5 NFL Teams That Cannot Afford To Lose Today. Do you think they’ll be able to win?

1. Carolina Panthers

The Panthers had high hopes for their 2012-13 season. After Cam Newton‘s stellar rookie campaign, the thought was that they might be able to contend for a playoff berth this year. But, so far, Newton has had a bit of a sophomore slump. He’s thrown just two touchdowns, while turning the ball over six times (five interceptions and one fumble) through three games. So, he needs to get back on track against a tough Atlanta Falcons team and help the Panthers turn their season around before it’s too late.

2. San Diego Chargers

The Chargers routinely gets off to slow starts. So, you’d think that a 2-1 start to this season would mean that they don’t have to worry as much as they usually do. But, they looked downright awful last week against the Falcons at home. So, they need to turn things around immediately by going into Kansas City and beating the Chiefs to prove that they’re for real this year.

3. Washington Redskins

After an exciting start to their season, Robert Griffin III & Co. have lost two straight games and given up a ton of points in the process. Their pass defense is currently the worst in the entire league. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers could also really use a win against them to avoid going 1-3. But, we think that the ‘Skins need a W more because of the fact that they play in the NFC East. It’ll be tough to get a win on the road. But, if they want to keep pace with the New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys, and Philadelphia Eagles, then they need to steal one from the Bucs.

4. San Francisco 49ers

Make no mistake about it: If the Niners lose to the New York Jets this weekend, they’re still going to the playoffs. Their team is too good not to make the postseason. But, after last week’s debacle against the Minnesota Vikings, they need to come out, make a statement, and regain their place amongst the NFL’s elite teams. And, unlike last year, it’s also important for us to point out that they’re not playing in the worst division in pro football anymore. With the Arizona Cardinals getting off to a 3-0 start (and with them playing against the Miami Dolphins this week), San Fran needs to win to keep up with them. Sorry, Jets fans, but the Niners will win this one.

5. Green Bay Packers

You could make the argument that the New Orleans Saints need to win this game just as badly as the Packers do. But, after last Monday night’s debacle in Seattle, which saw the replacement referees hand the Seahawks a win that belonged to the Packers, Green Bay needs this game to get back on the right track. If they lose it, everyone will say that this team unraveled after the Seattle game. So, they need to do everything in their power to get one in the win column here.
