Would You Watch The Batman Live Stage Show?

Batman has been everywhere from comic book pages to screens big and small, but this year, he’s coming to the live stage in the US. Batman Live made it’s American debut this month in California- but it looks like it’s more Disney On Ice than Dark Knight Rises.

According to Wikipedia, the show premiered in the UK last year. A few trailers and clips are available online:

I’m a little skeptical. “Live Action Arena Adventure” sounds like an over-inflated way of saying “over-sold stage play with special effects and no plot.”

A review in The Hollywood Reporter seems to say as much, saying that “Batman Live is less a work of theater than it is a parade.” Even worse, it noted that “the stage combat… has all the kinetic energy of a game of Yahtzee.” Calling this a “less ambitious production than Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark“- the $52 million, Julie Taymor/U2 trapeze acrobatic flop- sounds like a massive understatement (although hopefully, no one got hurt at Batman).

The review seems sympathetic to those who want to expose a 9-year-old to Batman without taking him to DKR or buying a hyper-violent video game. But if you are really so inclined, check this out. And if you really want to see A-list Broadway talent trying to bring a superhero to the stage, check this out.

Have you seen Batman Live? What did you think?
