Does Michael Vick Deserve To Have A Dog?

Submitted by on October 14, 2012 – 11:24 am3 Comments

By now, you’ve probably heard that Michael Vick has a dog again. No, this isn’t some bad joke involving Michael Vick and dogs. It’s the truth. Late last week, MV came out publicly for the first time and said that he is now the proud owner of a dog. There’s no word on what kind of dog it is. But, shortly after he confirmed that he does, in fact, own a dog just three years after getting out of prison on federal dogfighting charges, Vick released a statement directed at all those people out there who might be offended by his new purchase.

“I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family’s decision to care for a pet,” the statement said. “As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals. I want to ensure that my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God’s creatures with kindness and respect. Our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family…This is an opportunity to break the cycle. To that end, I will continue to honor my commitment to animal welfare and be an instrument of positive change.”

So then, the question has to be asked: Does Michael Vick deserve to have a dog? Well, there are plenty of people out there who have their doubts. They argue that Vick lost his right to own a dog when he committed a crime and got himself involved in a dogfighting ring. Others say that that part of Vick’s life is in the past. And, for what it’s worth, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals also issued a statement on Friday that expressed a mixed reaction to the news.

“The ASPCA has serious concerns about Vick’s ability to be a responsible pet owner,” the statement said. “We can only hope that Vick will set the right example for his children by teaching them to foster humane habits and a lifelong bond with their family pet.”

Our reaction? Let Vick have the dog. For starters, his children shouldn’t be punished because of his wrongdoings in the past. Secondly, Vick served his time and obeyed a court order not to own a dog during his probationary period after getting out of jail. And, really, does anyone think that Vick hasn’t learned his lesson after everything he’s gone through? We actually think that a dog in Vick’s house now might be safer than a dog almost anywhere else.

No joke, Vick’s dogfighting days are over. So, let him keep the pup in peace. At this point in his life, he deserves it that right.
