Should Tim Tebow Be Allowed To Trademark The “Tebowing” Pose?

Tim Tebow is about to become a millionaire! Okay, okay. So, Tebow already is a millionaire thanks to his NFL contracts and all of the endorsement deals that he’s earned over the last few years. But, he stands to make even more money now that he’s trademarked the “Tebowing” pose that he made famous during the 2011-12 NFL season. The trademark means that anytime someone decides to use the image of a person praying on one knee, they’ll have to hand over some cold hard cash to Tebow. He stands to make a fortune off it! It’s genius!

Er, okay. So, we’re not exactly 100 percent right on that, either. Technically, Tebow could make millions off his trademark. But, he didn’t trademark the “Tebowing” pose to strike it rich. Instead, he did it so that others can’t turn a profit off something that he considers sacred. Basically, he sought out the trademark to make sure that there weren’t people out there making millions off the image of him praying. And, we can’t blame him for it.

But, should he really even be allowed to own the trademark of an image of him praying? After all, much as we love Tebow and his story, he’s not the first person to ever take a knee during a football game. And, you know, he didn’t exactly invent the concept of praying. So, why does he get to own the image of him doing it? Well, like we said, he wants “to just control how it’s used, make sure it’s used in the right way.” Which is a good point, but still…Who died and made him the ruler of the praying pose?

In theory, we like what Tebow’s done here. We just hope that he never has to go to court and defend his trademark in an actual case. Because, if he does, we’re sure that there are going to be plenty of people out there who will have a big problem with him trying to own the “Tebowing” pose. And, more people disliking him for something that has to do with his religious beliefs is one thing that he definitely doesn’t need right now. So, we’re praying that it never comes to that.
