Did Tyrann Mathieu Just Blow His Last Chance To Return To College Football?

Former LSU college football standout Tyrann Mathieu isn’t doing himself any favors right now. Currently, he’s enrolled at LSU and taking classes. But, he’s not playing football because, over the summer, the LSU program became concerned with his marijuana use after he failed a drug test and suspended him for this year. Shortly after that happened, he took the necessary steps to get back into LSU’s good graces—he enrolled in rehab and sought out some help from former NBA player John Lucas—but it sounds like trouble has found him once again.

Yesterday, Mathieu, fellow former LSU player Jordan Jefferson, and two other men were arrested at Mathieu’s apartment near the LSU campus after police found a marijuana grinder, a digital scale, and ten bags of high-grade weed inside the apartment. They were called to the apartment yesterday afternoon when one of the men forced his way through a security gate outside the apartment. And, as a result of it, Mathieu was charged with simple possession of marijuana (one of the other men in the apartment got hit with a much more serious intent to distribute charge). It’s not the worst charge in the world. But, it is going to spell trouble for Mathieu. Did he just blow his last chance to get back into an LSU uniform?

Unfortunately, he probably did. In this situation, I can’t see how or why LSU coach Les Miles would ever let him back onto the team. While he may be innocent in this case, the simple fact that he’d even put himself into a position where he would be around marijuana again is a good indication that he’s not yet ready to play by LSU’s rules. And, while he could very well sign up to be a part of the 2013 NFL Draft next spring instead of trying to return to LSU, this isn’t a very good sign for Mathieu’s career moving forward. It still sounds like he needs to learn how to follow rules and how to be careful about who he associates with off the football field.

I’d be shocked if we ever saw Mathieu in an LSU jersey again after what happened yesterday. Then again, he is talented and, after this latest incident, he should learn his lesson once and for all. But, still: How many “second chances” is this guy going to get? At some point, LSU just needs to cut him off and let him sink or swim on his own. That point is now.
