Despite his almost meteoric rise to fame from a small-town boy in Tappahannock, Virginia, Chris Brown has become the poster child of everything that can go wrong when a person isn’t ready for sudden fame. The R&B singer recounted the highs and lows of his career recently for MTV’s This Is How I Made It.

“Firsthand to win a Grammy award, it was just the most, like that bliss feeling again,” Breezy admitted on the show. “I appreciate it so much to this day; I have it on a mantle and the light on it.”

But, Brown was also quick to address how things changed after his domestic abuse against Rihanna went public. “Having to get personal opinion back and having to gain personal success back, you know, it’s not all the way back you know,” he said. “But it’s one of my most humbling experiences.”

Despite the difficult road, the singer is slowly working towards redemption. “I can’t hate people making judgement but as long as my music gets you through your day, I’m doing my job,” says Brown. “All I can do is try to be a better person and I’m good with knowing life isn’t always gonna be perfect. My legacy can hopefully show [people] that once you’re down, that don’t just mean you’re down forever.
