Anonymous Hacks Lady Gaga, NBC For Guy Fawkes Day

“Remember, Remember The Fifth Of November!” So goes the rhyme about a failed assassination plot against a 17th-century English king, and the day when British subjects celebrate his survival. But the hacker group Anonymous found a different way to celebrate 5 November, or Guy Fawkes Day- by going on a prolific series of hacks.

BBC News reports:

The websites of US broadcaster NBC, pop singer Lady Gaga and the Australian government have all been attacked.

Some of the hacked websites displayed a rhyme about 5 November, when Guy Fawkes’s attempt to destroy Parliament in 1605 is marked in the UK.

The article also notes that Anonymous released what it claimed were 28,000 PayPal user passwords, though PayPal has denied any security breach.

It’s unclear why the group chose some targets. A video claimed that the overall protest was about strict surveillance measures; and the BBC does explain that the Australian government has been a target before over proposed Internet censorship legislation.

PayPal also found itself as a target for the group after cutting off payments to support Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks who is regarded as a hero among many Internet hacktivist groups.

Some might remember that Anonymous has made grand gestures around 5 November before, promising to “kill” Facebook in 2011 (though not apparently following through).

For many centuries, Guy Fawkes Day was a celebration of the British monarchy and anti-Catholic sentiment. But the smiling mask of the conspirator’s face has been appropriated by anti-establishment movements, especially following it’s use in the film V For Vendetta.
