Harrison Ford “Open” To Appearing In New Star Wars Films

Harrison Ford may don the black vest again for the role that made him a bona fide Hollywood action star. The 70-year-old icon is reportedly “open” to the idea of reprising his role as Han Solo for the upcoming new Star Wars films.

Last week, George Lucas announced that he has sold his LucasFilms production company, along with the rights to the Star Wars franchise, to Disney. Disney immediately announced plans to make at least three more films, citing a demand in the marketplace.

Entertainment Weekly reports on Ford’s rumored interest:

“Harrison is open to the idea of doing the movie and he’s upbeat about it, all three of them are,” said one highly placed source, referring to Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, the trio that made a hyper-speed jump to global fame on May 25, 1977, the opening night for George Lucas’s original “Star Wars” film.

A “highly placed source?” This exciting news should still probably be taken with a grain of salt, as Ford has been unenthusiastic about his role in the iconic films since they soared to pop culture ubiquity in the 70s and 80s. But big spending Disney might be able to lure him back with a significant pay day, especially if they can attach a critically respected writer and director to the project. Given the number of big directors who are overwhelming fanboys- I’m thinking J.J. Abrams, Joss Whedon, Kevin Smith, Jon Favreau, even Christopher Nolan- this shouldn’t be too tough.

But what would the dashing smuggler captain be doing as a septuagenarian? Maybe the hero of the rebel alliance focused more on military matters, then became an elder statesman. Or maybe he got fed up with politics and retired to a nice cabin in a far corner of the galaxy with Leia and Chewy.

What do you think of the original stars returning to Star Wars?
