Mark Cuban Reveals Why He Isn’t A Big Fan Of Facebook
Facebook is, hands down, the most popular social network in the United States right now. Although there are other popular forms of social media out there—namely, Twitter—Facebook is still the preferred source of social media for most Americans. But, we say “most,” because there are still some Americans who don’t like it very much. And, you can now include Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban as one of those people.
Recently, Cubes was asked his opinion on Facebook—and he spoke out against the way that Mark Zuckerberg & Co. have alienated businesses by forcing them to purchase “promoted posts” in order to reach potential customers. And, earlier this week, he also took to his personal blog to expound on his thoughts about Facebook. Specifically, he referred to it as a huge “time waste” that is over-thinking its role in social media.
“FB doesn’t seem to want to accept that its best purpose in life is as a huge time suck platform that we use to keep up with friends, interests and stuff,” Cuban wrote. “I think they are over-thinking what their network is all about. Being a time suck that people enjoy is a good thing…[But] who really appreciates that some posts rise to the top of their newsfeed because some folks they used to work with and are still friends with shared a baby picture?…In a perfect FB world every posts enters the friends/likes/subscriber’s timeline. If they log in and want to spend the time searching their timeline they see it, if not, not.”
Does Cuban have a point here? Should Facebook—or “FB” as he calls it—stop using algorithms to promote certain types of posts over others? Ehhh, we don’t think so. Facebook is far from perfect. But, they have made a conscious efforts to push promotional posts to the bottoms of our feeds, which we can appreciate. And, while we understand that a businessman like Cuban might not like it, we also don’t like being bombarded with posts that look like spam all day long.
So, we hope Facebook ignores Cuban on this one. Facebook is such an awesome “time suck” for a reason. Let’s keep it that way.
