Is This The Dumbest Promotional Idea That An NFL Team Has Ever Come Up With?

When it comes to sports, “waving a white flag” is not what you want your fans to be doing. It’s a sign that they’re surrendering and that they’re okay with the fact that there’s no chance that you can win. It’s a sign that they give up. It’s a sign that, quite frankly, reveals that they are quitters. So, then why in the world is one NFL team asking their fans to wave white flags during their home game on Sunday?

With the Pittsburgh Steelers set to come to come to town to take on the Cleveland Browns at Cleveland Browns Stadium Sunday afternoon, the Browns marketing department is preparing to hand out small white flags to all of their fans as part of a promotion for The NFL Ticket Exchange. And, while we’re sure this promo will help the Browns and the NFL get out the word about their ticket exchange, we’re not sure that it conveys the right message to the Browns or their fans. And, we can’t understand why someone in the organization hasn’t stopped and said, “Wait a second: White flags? What about black flags or, even better, brown flags? We’re the Browns, after all!”

This is going to be bad PR for the city of Cleveland. The team is already 2-8 on the season and probably won’t be able to beat the Steelers on Sunday, even though Pittsburgh will be without their starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and their backup quarterback Byron Leftwich. And, the white flags are only going to make things worse. It’s bad enough the Browns are putting out an inferior product on the field. Now, they want to put one into the stands, too?

We hope that other teams aren’t planning on using this promotion, too. And, we hope that whoever came up with this idea in the first place realizes just how stupid that it is now. The Browns are having a rough enough season as it is. So, why go and do this?
