Defense Expert Ricks Doesn’t Apologize To Fox News

Defense expert Thomas Ricks is still feuding with Fox News, despite a Fox executive’s insistence that the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist apologized to Fox staff. The controversy could prolong embarrassment over Ricks’ impromptu on-air critique of the network.

According to The Huffington Post, Ricks appeared on Fox News on Monday to promote his new book, The Generals, when co-anchor Jon Scott asked him about the Obama administration’s handling of the attacks on the Benghazi consulate.

I think Benghazi was generally hyped by this network especially,” Ricks said. He added that he thought McCain seemed to be “backing off” from criticizing Rice since “the campaign [was] over.” [...]

Ricks compared the situation to security contractors who were killed in Iraq. He described the attack in Benghazi as a “small fire-fight” and added, “I think the emphasis on Benghazi has been extremely political, partly because Fox is operating as the wing of the Republican Party.”

Scott then abruptly ended the interview.

On Tuesday, Fox vice president Michael Clemente told The Hollywood Reporter that Ricks had apologized to staffers in the newsroom, and challenged him to have “the strength of character to do that publicly.” Ricks responded that he had done no such thing. Clemente responded yet again, insisting that Ricks said he was tired; Clemente also jabbed that Ricks could now “rest.”

While Fox certainly wants to defend itself against such a blunt accusation of bias, it’s surprising that they let this episode devolve into a name-calling sideshow.

This isn’t the first time Fox News has been surprised by the political perspective of an on-air guest. Back in 2009, host Glenn Beck was stymied by Democratic Rep. Eric Massa, who had just resigned following revelations of inappropriate behavior with staffers. Massa had accused the White House and unions of corruption in forcing him out, but even the eager Beck was mystified by Massa’s baseless and cryptic accusations; at the end of the interview, Beck apologized for “wasting [America's] time.”

What do you think of this latest Fox News surprise?
