Was It Wrong For Jamaal Charles To Ask Peyton Manning For His Autograph After Playing Against Him On Sunday?

After the Kansas City Chiefs played the Denver Broncos on Sunday afternoon, Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles decided that he wanted to get Peyton Manning‘s autograph for his mom. So, he tracked Manning down in the parking lot, asked him for his John Hancock, and walked away with a big smile on his face. No big deal, right? Wrong.

A news crew was positioned to capture Manning walking out of the stadium on Sunday and they happened to catch Charles asking him for an autograph. So, shortly after Charles made his request, the video went up online, and thousands of Chiefs fans got to witness their star running back rubbing elbows with the guy that had just helped his team send the Chiefs to 1-10 on the season. As a result, they were understandably upset. And, their anger only intensified later when it was revealed that Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe had also posed for a picture with Manning after the game.

But, should Charles and Bowe really be crucified for what they did? For his part, Charles came out and explained that the autograph he asked for was actually for his mom, which seemed to satisfy a lot of people out there. But, Bowe’s explanation was that Manning is a living NFL legend and that he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to grab a photo with him. Either way, though, should these guys come under fire for speaking with Manning after losing to him?

The truth is that this probably goes on more than we care to believe. Athletes are just like us, and they like to collect sports memorabilia. So, we’re sure that they swap jerseys and trade autographs pretty often. We just don’t always hear about it. But, they should be sensitive to the fact that fans don’t like to see this kind of stuff go down. And, they should try and approach these situations a little bit more strategically. For instance, instead of waiting for Manning outside of the stadium, couldn’t Charles have tried to set up a quick meeting inside away from the media? And, couldn’t Bowe have kept his photo to himself once he got it? These guys are pro athletes, after all. They have the ability to meet and greet with other pro athletes and should use that access wisely.

Ultimately, Charles and Bowe sharing a moment with Manning isn’t the end of the world. But, when you’re 1-10 on the season, the last thing you should be doing is giving your fans anything else to grumble about. It’s the least you can do for them.
