House GOP Committee Chairs Are All White Guys

After being soundly defeated in November’s election by a coalition largely comprised of women and minorities, House Republicans show that they still have their finger firmly off the pulse of the nation. House Speaker John Boehner announced the chairs of all major committees for the upcoming Congress, and they are all Caucasian men.

However, the Huffington Post does point out some obstacles to Republican women and minorities getting these appointments:

To be fair, House committee chairs are typically chosen based on their seniority on the committee, and most committees don’t have Republican women or minorities at senior levels. In addition, there just aren’t that many House Republican women and minorities to go around. In the 113th Congress, which kicks off in January, House Republicans will have 20 women in their camp, compared to 61 House Democratic women. You can count on two hands the number of House Republicans who are minorities.

So maybe we shouldn’t make such a big deal about the lack of female and minority committee chairs- before we make a big deal about the lack of female and minority Republicans in the first place.

For those of you who don’t remember, women and minorities might have been driven away from the GOP this election cycle by: Rape comments, more rape comments, even more rape comments, abortion comments, slavery commentsanti-immigration rhetoric, and more anti-immigration rhetoric.

Maybe Mitt Romney can flip through those binders full of women to find a few Republican representatives.
