Would You Pay $85 For The World’s Best Beer?

The Trappist monks of Belgium’s Saint Sixtus Abbey operate the Westvleteren Brewery, where they brew Westvleteren XII, sometimes called the world’s best beer. Normally only sold at the monastery’s visitors center, the beer is available in extremely limited quantities in the US for the first- and possibly last- time.

According to Yahoo! News, the monks required additional funds for renovations:

“I think it will be the last [time],” Westvleteren Brewery spokesman Mark Bode told NPR. “They say, ‘We are monks, we don’t want to be too commercial. We needed some money to help us buy the new abbey and that’s it,’ Back to normal again.”

Over the course of their brewing history, the monks have repeatedly avoided publicity over their beer, and declined requests for increased production or distribution.

Crates of six-packs (which include two glasses) have been shipped to retailers internationally, and are priced at $84.99. At about $14 a bottle (not even counting the glasses!), some commenters have pointed out that the legendary brew is only slightly more expensive than  a Bud Light on an airplane or at a stadium.

Personally, I suppose I’d pony up the cash if I stumbled upon a few bottles- especially if some friends wanted to go in on it. But with stores selling out fast, I’m not going to go through the trouble of finding an available pack of the Westvleteren. Decent beer is pleasantly easy to come by these days; and when I’ve tried  heavily-hyped brews in the past (Unibroue Fin Du Monde, Ommegang Rare Vos), I’ve found myself a little disappointed despite them being perfectly good. Maybe cheese fries are a better accompaniment to beer than expectations.

What do you think? Are you running out to find a pack of Westvleteren XII?
