How Uncomfortable Was This Conversation That Rob Parker Started On ESPN First Take Yesterday?

Shhhh…Don’t tell anymore, but I have a confession to make. I am a huge fan of ESPN First Take. Okay, maybe “huge” is the wrong word to use here. But, I work out of my house everyday and everyday I find myself watching ESPN First Take. It’s sort of become a guilty pleasure of mine. I ask you not to tell anyone because there are a lot of sports bloggers out there who hate ESPN First Take. They hate Skip Bayless. They hate Stephen A. Smith. And, they hate any and everyone else who appears on the show. I, too, have been critical of the show in the past. But, even when I’ve been critical of it, I always come back to it.

One of the conversations they had yesterday, though, made me very, very uncomfortable. In the past, the talking heads on ESPN First Take have been criticized for “trolling” or saying things that are controversial and, in some cases, just downright crazy in order to get a rise out of people. But, something that one of those talking heads Rob Parker said yesterday actually made me change the channel for a few minutes. During a debate about Robert Griffin III and the fact that he doesn’t want to be defined by the fact that he is black, Parker questioned RGIII’s “blackness” and seemingly said that he’s not a “real” black man, whatever that means.

“I want to find out about him,” Parker said. “I don’t know because I keep hearing these things. We all know he has a white fiancee. Then, there was all this talk about him being a Republican, which there’s no information at all. I’m just trying to dig deeper into why he has an issue.”

WTF? I’ve heard Bayless say his fair share of off-the-wall stuff about Tim Tebow. And, Stephen A. has caught flack for some of the stuff he’s said on the air, too. But, what Parker said was completely unnecessary. Outside of the fact that it made everyone at the table uncomfortable, he also was basically spewing stuff that may or may not have been true about RGIII. It was ridiculous.

Does it mean I’m going to stop watching the show? Eh. I’m sure I’ll be back. I might even be watching it by the time you read this. But, the guys on ESPN First Take need to be careful. There are a lot of eyes on them right now, and they don’t need to be making declarations like the one Parker just made to get ratings. C’mon, guys. Think before you speak.

Watch the video below. Does it make you as uncomfortable as it made me?
