The first trailer for Guillermo Del Toro‘s monster homage Pacific Rim has arrived, and it has the most giant robots and alien sea giants of any film this season since Battleship:

My first thought when I watched this trailer was, “What video game is this movie based on?” And I meant that totally sincerely and non-judgmentally; I was just curious.

But I was wrong; the film is an original idea from screenwriter Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans), further developed by the renowned Spanish director himself (Children of Men, Pan’s Labyrinth). Though you can understand my confusion: in another tribute to nerdom, Del Toro secured Ellen McLain, the voice of the computer system GLaDOS in the popular video game Portal, to voice a computer featured in the trailer here.

The film is reportedly an tribute to Japanese giant monster movies (like Godzilla) known as Kaiju. Del Toro has said that he intends to make the movie “a beautiful poem to giant monsters.”

Well, at least he’s honest about his intentions. What do you think of the first look at Pacific Rim?
