Jovan Belcher Murder-Suicide: Did Questions About His Daughter’s Paternity Make Him Snap?

More details on what possibly led to the murder-suicide orchestrated by NFL star Jovan Belcher earlier this month are beginning to emerge. The Kansas City Chiefs linebacker committed suicide at Arrowhead Stadium in front of team officials shortly after shooting and killing his girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, following a huge blowout argument at their home. The couple left behind a 3-month-old daughter, Zoey.

Reportedly, Belcher’s mother, Cheryl Shepherd, who was present in the home when her son shot Kasandra nine times, has told investigators that there were doubts about whether he really was Zoey’s father. The child’s paternity may have been at the center of the duo’s argument the morning of the tragedy. A source told the NY Post:

“The mother believed that there was an issue over whether [Belcher] was the father. She said he [believed he] wasn’t necessarily the father of the child.”

Although the paternity issue hasn’t definitively been pinpointed as the reason why Jovan snapped, the source added:

“But the implication was that [paternity] was what the two of them were fighting about — that the baby might not have been his.”

The Kansas City Police Department is expected to conclude their investigation into what led to the murder-suicide very soon, with their findings being presented to prosecutors as early as this week.
