They don’t call it the land of the free and the home of the brave for nothing, because it takes some pretty big balls (literally!) to do what Connie Fleming just did.

Self-proclaimed as “one of New York’s most influential transvestite, drag, and transgendered performers,” Fleming embodies the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, for the cover of the first transversal lifestyle magazine Candy. According to their website, “Candy is the first fashion magazine completely dedicated to celebrating transvestism, transexuality, crossdressing and androgyny in all their glory. Candy is a style magazine about fashion, art, culture, make-up, glamour, icons, amazing transformations and fun. Candy is a magazine for everybody. It’s a space for individual freedom, and a publication that pushes people to take on the persona they’ve always wanted.”

The magazine, which has featured non-transvestites, like actor James Franco, on the cover, pushed the boundaries with their latest issue. “I especially love the cover story, which for the first time isn’t a super-popular star, but a fabulous, beautiful Black transwoman channeling a politician who looks pretty much like Michelle Obama,” publisher Luis Venegas said about the image shot by Danielle Levitt and styled by Brad Goreski. “I remember back in early 2007 when the Democratic Party’s nominees were narrowed down between two ‘controversial’ stereotypes never before seen for presidency: a Black man, Barack Obama; and a woman, Hillary Rodham Clinton. At that time, I thought, ‘When will the time come when these archaic walls break down and the White House will be occupied by, for example, a Black, transsexual woman?’”

Check out the second Candydate cover below. Do you think these images are sweet—or do they leave a sour taste in your mouth?
