A 16-Year-Old Boy Was Killed Over A Pair Of Air Jordans Recently

A pair of Air Jordans have just claimed another life. And, while we’ve heard about Air Jordans causing disputes, arguments, and even murders in the past, this latest story is particularly hard to hear because it involves a 16-year-old who was involved in an argument over a pair of Air Jordans that ended up costing him his life.

Last week, 16-year-old Houston, TX native Juan Reyna agreed to buy a pair of Air Jordan sneakers from a 19-year-old neighbor named Yusef Villanueva. He paid for the sneakers and took them home. But, several days later, Villaneuva went to Reyna’s home and the two boys (let’s remember that, despite their ages, these are two boys) got into an argument over the sneakers. Police haven’t revealed exactly what that argument was about, but they say that, at some point, the argument turned physical. At the time, Villanueva had a gun on him. So, when things started to get out of hand, he pulled the gun out and fired it. He claims that it went off on accident but, either way, it fired, struck Reyna, and killed him.

The authorities are still trying to piece together evidence to figure out exactly what went down inside of Reyna’s home that day. But, they have decided to go ahead and charge Villanueva with murder. Meanwhile, Reyna—who would have turned 17 years old on Thursday—was laid to rest on his birthday. What a sad, sad story.

We really shouldn’t have to say this, but we will anyway. We all love sneakers, folks. But they are not—let us repeat, they are not—worth dying over. So, before you get into a fight over your sneakers or you pull out a gun because of them, remember that. It’s just too bad that two boys had to find that out the hard way.
