Chinese Model Fei Fei Sun Makes History As The First Asian Model To Cover Vogue Italia
Consider this another battle won in the Asian Invasion.
Chinese model Fei Fei Sun has broken barriers to become the first Asian to grace the cover of Vogue Italia. Shot by famed fashion photographer Steven Meisel, Fei Fei channels 1950′s supermodel China Machado for a spread deemed by the fashion bible as “fusion elegance. The language of style is universal: border-free. Thus, by evoking the exotic and sophisticated allure of China Machado, the fusion icon of the Fifties, a story of elegance and refinement is recounted.”
While this may be the first time an Asian model has gone solo for a cover, she is not the first Asian model to grace the cover entirely. “We put Fan Bingbing on the cover of L’Uomo Vogue and we dedicated an entire issue to China,” editor Franca Sozzani told the Cut. “In the past, we’ve done many shoots with Asian girls, with photographers like Peter Lindbergh or Steven Meisel or Craig McDean.”
