Did Carmelo Anthony Deserve To Be Suspended One Game For Getting Into An Altercation With Kevin Garnett?

When this week started, Carmelo Anthony probably didn’t expect to be making the kinds of headlines that he’s making right now. But, on Monday night, ‘Melo and Kevin Garnett were involved in an incident on the court during a matchup between the New York Knicks and the Boston Celtics that resulted in both players receiving technical fouls. And, what happened after the game raised a lot of eyebrows.

According to numerous reports, ‘Melo attempted to confront KG in the Celtics locker room after the final buzzer about something that he had said to him on the court. When that didn’t work, he waited outside the Celtics team bus for KG and, eventually, the two were involved in an altercation that involved a lot of yelling back and forth. They eventually worked whatever issue they had with one another out during a phone call a few minutes later. But, the media took the story and ran with it immediately. And, within 24 hours, a rumor was circulating about how KG had told ‘Melo that his wife LaLa “tasted like Honey Nut Cheerios” (ridiculous, we know) and that that had set ‘Melo off. Celtics coach Doc Rivers and others disputed the rumor, but one thing is for sure: KG said something to get ‘Melo all worked up…and it worked.

In the midst of all the chaos, some NBA analysts wondered if ‘Melo would be punished for his actions. He hadn’t thrown a punch or hit KG with an elbow or done any physical damage to him. But, he had made the league look bad by creating a scene after the game. So, yesterday, the NBA handed down a ruling and decided to suspend him for last night’s Knicks game against the Indiana Pacers. And, in doing so, they raised an interesting question: Did ‘Melo actually deserve a suspension for essentially yelling at a guy?

I’d argue that he did deserve it. Although he didn’t technically break any rules, ‘Melo—and every other player in the NBA—needs to realize that what he does, both on and off the court, affects how people perceive the NBA. And, in this day and age where just about everything is either filmed or documented through social networking sites like Twitter and Instagram, players like ‘Melo are constantly under surveillance. So, while he didn’t fight KG, he may as well have. What happened was just as bad and reflected poorly on the NBA.

I hope the NBA doesn’t stop there, though. I hope they also talk to both ‘Melo and KG to find out exactly what happened between them so that incidents like the one that took place can be eliminated in the future. There’s a place for trash talk between players in the NBA. But, when it goes too far and ends with two players chasing after one another in the bowels of an NBA arena, it’s obviously gone too far.

What do you think? Did ‘Melo deserve a suspension or not? Let us know in the comment section below.
