Man Secretly Outsources His Own Job To China, Surfs Reddit

This takes “delegating responsibilities” to a whole new level. A Verizon Security Blog reported this week that the company caught a US software developer hiring a Chinese consulting firm to do all of his work for him- at one-fifth of his salary. The scheme was discovered when the man’s employer noticed that their private computer network was being accessed daily from China.

Called “Bob” in the case study, the unassuming 40ish “family man” reportedly worked for a “critical infrastructure company” which had instituted several layers of security to access their network. Therefore, the breach of their system was especially troubling.

The team immediately knew that the Chinese account was using Bob’s credentials to access the network. But the idea that Bob could be complicit was unthinkable… until they examined his desktop workstation, and discovered “hundreds of .pdf invoices from a third party contractor/developer in (you guessed it) Shenyang, China.”

The case study notes that the company’s access records only went back six months, and  Bob had been outsourcing his work to China that whole time. He had worked at the company for a “relatively long tenure,” and may have had similar schemes with other companies in the area.

Earning hundreds of thousands of dollars, Bob paid an estimated $50,000 annually to the Chinese company. He simply shipped them the security hardware they needed to access the network.

Here’s the kicker: Bob was the best reviewed developer in the building.

But Bob continued to show up for work everyday! So what did he do? Investigators worked out a general schedule based on his browsing history:

9:00 a.m. – Arrive and surf Reddit for a couple of hours. Watch cat videos

11:30 a.m. – Take lunch

1:00 p.m. – Ebay time.

2:00 – ish p.m Facebook updates – LinkedIn

4:30 p.m. – End of day update e-mail to management.

5:00 p.m. – Go home

What I want to know is: what did Bob do when security investigators showed up and started poking around his computer? I guess he just enjoyed it while he could.

This guy either deserves jail time for fraud, or some kind of slacking gold medal. What do you think?
