Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, and James Franco Get Bad In Spring Breakers
Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens completely shed any remnants of their Disney Channel roots in the first trailer for Spring Breakers, where they play young women who rob a restaurant to pay for their hedonistic vacation, eventually linking up with an arms and drug dealer.
Meanwhile, as said manic, corn-rowed, tatooed, grilled, (Southern?) arms and drug dealer, James Franco continues to do about what is expected of him these days.
The film also stars Rachel Korine (the director’s wife, Septien) and Ashley Benson (Pretty Little Liars).
Spring Breakers is directed by Harmony Korine, most famous for avant garde films like Mister Lonely and Trash Humpers (which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like). Korine’s style is notable for often being almost unintelligible and even unwatchable.
But by shooting a film with young stars and starlets mostly in bathing suits committing action-packed violent crimes, it’s possible that the director is trying something new.
So is this basically the arthouse version of The Real Cancun? In the right hands (or perhaps, with the right credibility and hype), grindhouse material can become fine cinema: the film has already been selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
What do you think? Will you see Spring Breakers?
