Is The NFL Going To Be Extinct In 30 Years?

Baltimore Ravens safety Bernard Pollard knows how to make headlines. Recently, he’s made them for doing all kinds of things. After the Ravens knocked off the New England Patriots last Sunday, he made them for accusing Pats quarterback Tom Brady of intentionally kicking his teammate Ed Reed. Then, he made headlines again later that week when a New York Times article revealed that he regularly does locker room interviews in the nude. And then, over this past weekend, Pollard made his biggest headlines yet after he made some pretty controversial statements about the future of the NFL. Specifically, he said that he thinks the league will not be around anymore in 30 years.

“I don’t think it will be in existence,” he told CBS Sports. “I could be wrong. It’s just my opinion, but I think with the direction things are going—where NFL [rule makers] want to lighten up, and they’re throwing flags and everything else—there’s going to come a point where fans are going to get fed up with it. Guys are getting fined and they’re talking about ‘Let’s take away the strike zone’ and ‘Take the pads off’ or ‘Take the helmets off.’ It’s going to be a thing where fans aren’t going to want to watch it anymore.”

Do you really see that happening, though? Will NFL fans just up and leave the sport if the NFL keeps trying to protect players with their rules? Is the league doomed? Short answer…

No. As of right now, the league isn’t in any immediate danger of closing up shop. In fact, the NFL has never been more popular than it is right now. And, as long as there are young players who are willing to put their health at risk for the sake of playing the sport, football will live on. It may not look like it does today for much longer—we think NFL games will look a lot different in 30 years, that’s for sure—but it will continue to push forward with new rules and regulations aimed at making the game safer. That may not make players happy, and it may not make the game itself better. But, we don’t agree with Pollard. The NFL will be here in 30 years. It just won’t be the same brand of football we’re used to seeing now.
