Lucasfilms Stops 3D Star Wars Re-Releases
Disney has owned Lucasfilms for less than a year, and already they’re making some better decisions than George Lucas. Deadline broke the news yesterday that they would not re-release any more Star Wars movies in 3D, focusing instead on the new films they are producing for the franchise.
Star Wars Episode 1 was re-released in 3D almost a year ago, bringing in a disappointing $23 million domestically. (The original took in over $64 million on its opening weekend alone.)
So the decision, like most in Hollywood, is probably economic. But, unlikely as it is, Lucasfilms’ new execs could actually be trying to make good movies that fanboys will like too.
This same week, they announced that geek demi-god J.J. Abrams (Lost, Star Trek) would be directing. Michael Arndt, the scribe of Oscar-winning indie darling Little Miss Sunshine, was previously announced to write the script. It hardly seems like a totally commercial duo.
The directing gig had previously been turned down, even scorned, by several directors- including J.J. Abrams, who said he “wouldn’t even want to be involved” with “these things.”
Then again, die-hard fans would be most happy if Disney just stepped away and didn’t touch their beloved franchise. So the studio appears to be trying to balance pure commercialism and actual popular appeal.
