It wasn’t all that long ago that Victor Cruz was still trying to scrape his pennies together to pick up the latest pair of sneakers. In fact, you could argue that the New York Giants wide receiver is still doing that. Although he made the 2013 Pro Bowl this season, Cruz still doesn’t make a whole lot of money compared to some of the other wideouts in the NFL (he made “only” $540,000 this year, not including his endorsement deals). But, things are looking up for him these days, as he’s looking to cash-in on a new contract this offseason, and he’s also built up some solid relationships over at Nike in order to bolster his growing collection of sneakers. As a result, he says he now owns about 350 pairs of Nikes, Air Jordans, and “high-end” sneakers.

During Super Bowl XLVII week, Cruz sat down to talk with Kicks On Fire about a number of different things, including his love for sneakers, his ability to call in favors from Nike, and, of course, which sneaker he’d love to wear on the field. Here were some of the highlights:

On how he got into collecting sneakers: “It really didn’t start that long ago. I’ve always been a fan of sneakers. When I was a kid, I always tried to get my hands on the best pair that I can [but] my mom could not always get me the pair that I wanted due to the price and how we were living when we were coming up. So, it started about four or five years ago. I really decided to collect sneakers and built my resume, built my archive up a little bit.”

On how he gets most of his sneakers: “I call up my people over at Nike and I tell them that this pair is coming out in so many days [and] is there anything [they] can do for me and they get back with me pretty quick and hook me up with the shoe most of the time. It’s a blessing to have [that kind of] relationship with Nike.”

On which sneaker he’d love to turn into a football cleat: “I think I would have to go with the “Bugs Bunny” Air Jordan 8s. They got the straps already on and you just got to tighten them up…I think they would look clean with some cleats on the bottom.”
