ESPN’s “Gotta Be The Shoes” Showcases The Impact That Air Jordans Have Had On Michael Jordan’s Legacy
Next Sunday, Michael Jordan will celebrate his 50th birthday. It may be hard to believe if you’re an MJ fan and remember him from his playing days. But, the greatest basketball player ever will celebrate the big 5-0 on Sunday. And, many basketball blogs, sports sites, and TV networks have already started celebrating the GOAT’s birthday. They’ve put together lists of his greatest plays, taken a closer look at his impact on the sport of basketball, and done anything and everything to show MJ some love. They’ve also paid homage to the Air Jordan sneaker brand a lot since it continues to help MJ build his legacy.
Over the weekend, ESPN even went all out and showed a SportsCenter segment called “Gotta Be The Shoes,” which took a closer look at just how important the Air Jordan sneakers were to MJ’s legacy. They talked to a number of different NBA players, including LeBron James, Chris Paul, and Ray Allen, about the lasting impact that MJ has had on the NBA. And, they also got with Jordan designer Tinker Hatfield to talk specifically about some of the Air Jordans that he helped to design and create. MJ himself doesn’t speak in the segment (outside of a few interview clips from years ago). But, to be honest, he didn’t have to. That sort of speaks to the fact that, because of his sneakers, MJ doesn’t have to speak ever again and people will still love and respect him for what he continues to bring to the table with the Jordan Brand.
If you missed “Gotta Be The Shoes” on ESPN, we’ve included a video of the segment below. There will definitely be a ton of different celebratory pieces done on MJ this week. But, this particular one really shows the impact that MJ had and, more importantly, the impact that he continues to have because of his signature sneakers. Take a look at the video below. And, make sure you send MJ a birthday card this week. After watching this clip, it’s clear that he deserves one from all of us.
