Will This 18-Year-Old Make A “Smart Watch” Before Apple?
Unlike many Canadian teenagers, Simon Tian isn’t getting ready for college. The 18-year-old Quebec entrepreneur ended his college prep to start Neptune, a company which he claims will produce devices that combine the functionality of everything from iPhones to PCs. And right now, Tian is set to unveil a Neptune smart watch- months before tech giant Apple could produce the device they are rumored to be developing.
Reports of an “iWatch” began to grow just this week after reports in both the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. And just yesterday, Bloomberg reported that “two people familiar with the company’s plans” claimed that 100 product designers (!) are working on the high tech time piece.
But the initial reports all suggest that the iWatch would be peripheral to other Apple devices. Tian’s watch is reportedly a fully-fuctioning smarthphone that fits on your wrist, using Google’s Android iOS. It even has a camera.
If the renderings that Neptune offers are any indication, Apple could still have an edge from their partnership with Corning. The glassmaker recently announced their development of flexible Willow Glass, which one executive said could wrap around someone’s wrist.
But Tian appears to be further from a workable product than he might suggest, with Mashable saying his specifications “are extremely ambitious when compared with what’s already on the market.”
What do you think? Would you buy a smart watch?
