First Trailer For The Internship, The Owen Wilson/Vince Vaughn/Google Comedy

Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn are back together onscreen for the first time since their 2005 hit, Wedding Crashers. In the first trailer for the upcoming The Internship, it looks like the duo borrows from earlier similar comedies, adding a healthy dose of Google product placement.

From what I can gather, Vaughn and Wilson play buddies and co-workers, who get laid off from a company that would have been behind-the-times twenty years ago. The middle-aged unemployed men then get internships at Google, and must beat out much younger candidates if they have any hope of surviving in today’s job market.

So guys who were once on top of their game are cast down to the bottom of the ladder, and must triumph in one big winner-take-all contest, while developing flimsy romances and learning about friendship. This is semi-famously the basic plot line of pretty much every Will Ferrell movie, as well as Dodgeball, Old School (starring Owen’s brother Luke Wilson), and similar titles.

I’m kind of surprised if this was made in cooperation with Google (and given the shots of the Googleplex and the ease with which this could have been fictionalized, it seems like it was). But I guess the company, which is struggling to redefine itself as an advertising/social media powerhouse, could use some good PR that highlights its quirky roots.

The Internship is set to debut in June. What do you think?
