Is Nike Going To Re-Release Gary Payton’s Air Zoom Flight 98 “The Glove” This Year?

When the first photos of the new Nike Air Jordan XX8 dropped late last year, people immediately started to compare it to another Nike sneaker that the Swoosh dropped 15 years ago. That sneaker? The iconic Nike Air Zoom Flight 98 “The Glove” that was worn by former Seattle Supersonics great Gary Payton back in the late 1990s. The XX8 reminded people of the Air Zoom Flight 98 “The Glove” so much because of the sheath that covers the entire XX8 sneaker. A similar sheath was a defining characteristic of “The Glove” and really helped characterize the lockdown defense that Payton played during his time in the NBA.

Now, it appears as though Nike will be re-releasing the Nike Air Zoom Flight 98 “The Glove” sometime later this year. Although no official details have been made available yet, the photos that you see here popped up on the ‘net earlier this week and have a lot of basketball fans and sneakerheads out there salivating. As you can see, “The Glove” looks like it will make its long-awaited return to the sneaker game complete with the zipped-up shroud that was present on the original sneaker as well as a black, white, and red colorway underneath the shroud. Just seeing it again instantly reminds us of just how similar it is to the Jordan XX8 and makes us want to get our hands on it.

As we said, we’re not sure when or even if this retro sneaker will drop this year. But, judging by the photos you see here, Nike is working on something related to “The Glove” and it’d make sense for them to drop it this year while the XX8 is still all the rage. So, stay tuned. We’ll be sure to bring you more details on “The Glove” as they become available. Check out some more photos of it below and let us know if you’d be interested in picking up a pair of these classic sneakers if Nike drops them later this year.
