Astronaut Celebrates St. Patrick’s Day From Space On Social Media

Cmdr. Chris Hadfield seems to have a lot of time on his hands for a guy orbiting the Earth. The Canadian astronaut and active Redditor, currently on the International Space Station, recorded an acoustic version of “Danny Boy” for St. Patrick’s Day.

Hadfield already recorded a song in space, when he laid down the track for his original composition “Jewel in the Night” last December. He’s often cited as the first person to record a song in orbit, though astronauts had certainly performed music in space before, including Catherine Coleman sharing an Irish flute performance for St. Patrick’s Day 2011.

The retired Royal Canadian Air Force Colonel also took to Twitter to wish the world a “Maidin mhaith” (good morning) and to show off his festive green sweater and bow tie (above). He later tweeted space-born photos of the Emerald Isle. Hadfield has over 500,000 Twitter followers.

Hadfield is also an active Redditor, hosting several AMA interviews on the influential social news site, and often posting his videos and songs there.

Cmdr. Hadfield is a deeply impressive and admirable guy- but it’s still not my favorite rendition of “Danny Boy.”

What do you think?
