Can Anybody Stop The Miami Heat’s Winning Streak?

February 1. That’s the last time the Miami Heat lost a basketball game. Nearly two months and 23 games have passed by since that time and the Heat are putting together one of the most remarkable winning streaks in the history of the NBA. With the exception of the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers and their surreal 33-game winning streak, the Heat are the pick of the litter in the NBA. Trying to figure out who is going to end this streak has becoming increasingly difficult.

Let’s put it in perspective: In 23 games, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and the rest of the wrecking crew have won more games than the Charlotte Bobcats, Orlando Magic and Cleveland Cavs have won in this entire season. They are ten games away from breaking the Lakers record and former Laker Jerry West seems excited at the prospect.

“I think [the Heat] have an incredible chance to do it,” West said according to ESPN. “It may not end. That’s why I think it’s so remarkable. I look at the schedule and I see one team on there that’s a terrific team and obviously that’s the Spurs. That would be a game that I would be concerned about, playing in San Antonio and they’re going to have Tony Parker back by then.”

That game doesn’t take place until March 31 and in that time the Heat could reel off another five wins to get their streak to 28. If San Antonio can’t do it, the New York Knicks will be next to keep them from reaching 30. And if the Heat get past both the Knicks and the Spurs, that 41-year record may come tumbling down. With games against Philly, Milwaukee and Washington left to get them to 33, only the Celtics could keep them from breaking the record.

Obviously, anything can happen between now and then. But the level of play that the Heat are at right now makes them the most feared team in the league. No, they won’t eclipse the Chicago Bulls 72-10 season, but they could come pretty close to that level of brilliance. Until then, it will be fun to watch.
