India.Arie Blasts Skin Lightening Rumors: “I Love My #Brownskin More Than EVER!”

India.Arie famously sang, “I Am Not My Hair,” on her 2006 hit single of the same name. But, after publicity photos for her new song, “Cocoa Butter,” hit the Internet recently, many fans have accused the R&B singer of not being about her brown skin.

The 37-year-old singer, who burst on the scene with songs like “Video” and “Brown Skin,” has always embraced her dark skin, natural hair, and afro-centric features. So, it was a surprise to many when India’s latest pictures featured the singer looking much lighter than usual. Sources in the singer’s camp say the drastic difference in skin tones is simply due to a sophisticated camera flash. India took to Twitter to speak on the controversy.

“Personally speaking! I’m happy to say I have NOT BLEACHED my skin LOL! ROTF at the thought,” India wrote. “Oh! And yes! I love my #brownskin more than EVER! MUUUUUUUCH longer conversation. #soulbirdsworldwide.” The singer continued the conversation on her Facebook page, posting:

Love to all #SoulBirdsWorldWide are you ready for this #SongVersation ?

1. I wouldn’t endanger my health that way

2. I’m so in love with myself I have no DESIRE to BLEACH myself. Lol

3. The GLOW you see IS (magnificent) lighting

4. THE LIGHT you see, Well thats all ME!!

Politically speaking racism/colorism in the black community is a MUUUUUUUCH larger #SongVersation #skinversaton

THAT I’d LOVE to “shed light on”..that conversation IS REAL, …let’s keep talking. #SongVersation #soulbirdsworldwide

Big love to ALL #soulbirdsworldwide

Listen to “Cocoa Butter,” the song that started the controversy, below. Do you think India lightened her skin color on purpose?
