Will Kevin Ware’s Horrific Leg Injury Inspire Louisville To Win The 2013 NCAA Tournament?

I didn’t see Louisville guard Kevin Ware break his leg. On Sunday afternoon, during the first half of the Louisville/Duke game in the Elite 8 round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament, Ware snapped his right leg in half and brought many of his teammates and coaches to tears. I, for one, haven’t gone back and watched a highlight of the injury because I hear that it was brutal. But, having seen horrific leg and ankle injuries before, I feel like I have a pretty good idea of what happened when Ware broke his leg. And, I also have a pretty good idea of what his injury means to the Cardinals—it means that they’re now the favorite to win the NCAA Tournament.

Even before Ware’s injury took place, the Cardinals were favored to win the tournament. They were, after all, the only No. 1 seed remaining in the tournament as of Sunday morning. Thanks to their fast-paced offense and their defensive pressure, Louisville has been picked by many college basketball analysts to win the tournament. But, Ware’s injury gives them an even bigger psychological edge now, a psychological edge that was present during the second half of their game against Duke. It helped them blow the Blue Devils out and carried them into the Final Four. And, that psychological edge will also carry into their next game against Wichita State, a tough team in their own right that is basically playing with house money at this stage of the tournament.

As of right now, Louisville has everything working in their favor. They are playing the best basketball on the court. They have a deep lineup that allows them to match up against anyone. And, now, they have Kevin Ware’s injury lingering in the back of their minds. They want to win this tournament for him and give him another trophy to hold (they delivered the trophy that you see above to his hospital room after they beat Duke). That is going to be too much for any other team remaining in the tournament to handle. So, I would be shocked if they didn’t win it all this year. You might as well start engraving their name on the championship trophy now.
