Tinker Hatfield Designed These Shoes For His Young Daughter Long Before He Created A Single Sneaker For Michael Jordan

Tinker Hatfield is, arguably, the most important person in the history of sneakers. You could certainly make an argument for other sneaker designers—or, hell, for someone like Michael Jordan, who completely revolutionized the way people look at sneakers—but Hatfield’s designs are what helped solidify MJ as such a force to be reckoned with in the sneaker game. For years now, he’s been coming up with totally unique designs for the Jordan Brand and, year in and year out, he delivers with the sneakers he designs for both Jordan and Nike. So, you might be a little bit surprised to hear that the sneakers you see above were created by Hatfield.

Now, we know what you’re thinking: “He created those? Was he drinking heavily when he made them?” Not exactly. Rather, these were actually the very first pair of sneakers that Hatfield ever created. Way back in 1980, before the world had any idea of just how big Michael Jordan—or Nike, for that matter—would become, Hatfield sat down and created these sneakers for his young daughter. She was a toddler and needed new sneakers, so he decided to create them himself. And, the result was an olive shoe with a gigantic toe box and a bright Swoosh on the side. A photo of them was put up on Twitter by Nike PR person Heidi Burgett on Friday and show just how far Hatfield has come in the last 30-plus years.

What do you think about these sneakers? Would you let your kid wear them? And, more importantly, are you surprised at how far Tinker Hatfield has come since 1980? Let us know in the comments section below. And, the next time you slide a pair of Jordans onto your feet, remember them. It’s pretty amazing to think that the same guy who created your favorite Js also had a hand in creating these.
