Is Dez Bryant Really A Good Fit For The Jordan Brand?

The athletes who are signed to Jordan Brand have one thing in common. From the NBA‘s Chris Paul to the NFL‘s Hakeem Nicks, all Jordan Brand athletes are incredibly talented and exhibit a certain level of excellence. They conduct themselves both on and off the court with the mentality of a superstar, and they do everything in their power to be the best at what they do. So, with that in mind, you might be a little bit surprised to hear about the latest athlete to sign with Michael Jordan‘s brand:

That’s right. Late last week, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant announced that he’s now running with the Jordan Brand team. There’s been no word yet as to what Jordan gear he’ll wear next season. But, him joining the Jordan Brand means that Michael Jordan himself believes that Bryant belongs. So, we have to ask: Does Dez Bryant really deserve to play alongside the rest of the Jordan Brand athletes?

Conventional wisdom says no. Bryant hasn’t won any NFL championships yet. He hasn’t set any records. And, overall, he hasn’t been the best role model off the field. From getting arrested for sagging his pants in a mall to getting arrested for getting into an altercation with his mother, Bryant has stayed in the news for all the wrong reasons over the course of the last few years. So, he might not be a natural fit with the Jordan Brand.

At the same time, it does sound like Bryant has been working to change his image. Last season, he played the last quarter of the season with a badly-injured finger and did everything in his power to help the Cowboys reach the playoffs (they ultimately came up short). He’s also gone on the record and said that he thinks he can become the first NFL receiver ever to record 2,000 receiving yards in a single season. And, recently, he came out and apologized for all of his off-the-field issues. It’s definitely a step in the right direction.

With that in mind, we like the gamble that the Jordan Brand is making here. Bryant might not be the epitome of a JB athlete right now. But, over time, we think he’ll get there. And, he’ll be every bit as worthy of being a JB athlete as Paul and Nicks. It’ll just take him another year or two to get there.
