Is Jay-Z Going To Be Successful As An NBA Agent?

Jay-Z is ready to take over the game. Not the rap game, though. Or the fashion game. Or the liquor game. No, Jay-Z is literally “taking over the game” by selling his shares of the Brooklyn Nets and becoming certified as an NBA agent. Nothing is official just yet. But, according to a report that was released earlier this week, Hov is going to relinquish his small stake in the Nets in order to become eligible to be an NBA agent. And the plan is for him to start signing new NBA clients as early as this summer in the weeks leading up to the 2013 NBA Draft. But, with little experience as an agent and little time to learn the ropes, is there anyway that Jay is going to actually be successful as a sports agent?

Conventional wisdom says that Jay-Z will struggle. About 15 years ago, Master P launched No Limit Sports and tried to do the same exact thing that Jay-Z is attempting to do right now with Roc Nation Sports. He wanted to use his appeal as a rapper to sign young athletes and represent them and their brands. But he failed miserably and eventually had to close up shop. So there’s a chance the same thing could happen to Roc Nation Sports. However, Jay does have one thing on his side. He’s rolling with Creative Artist Agency (CAA) as he prepares to become an agent, so he’ll have all of their agents at his disposal. He’s also routinely surrounded himself with the right people when doing any business deal. So we assume that he will do the same here. Jay is never afraid to ask for help. And that’s why he’s been able to be so successful over time.

If he uses that help and does everything in his power to learn the sports representation business, there’s a good chance that Jay-Z can be successful and take over the game. But we shouldn’t expect too much out of him too soon. We don’t foresee him signing a bunch of big free agents right away and helping them sign gigantic contracts. Likewise, we don’t expect to see LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony flocking to Roc Nation Sports right now. But, as a rookie in the game, Jay-Z has all the potential in the world, provided he’s ready to work hard at it. And we wouldn’t be surprised at all if it leads him to bigger and better things in this particular arena.
