Dikembe Mutombo’s adidas Sneaker Is Being Re-Released This Summer

Submitted by on April 14, 2013 – 9:56 am2 Comments

Legendary NBA center Dikembe Mutombo is enjoying a bit of a moment right now. Earlier this year, he was featured in an advertising campaign for Old Spice. Then, he made some major waves when he appeared in a new commercial for GEICO that featured him blocking, well, everything and saying, “No, no, no,” in his deep voice. And now, it appears as though adidas is ready to capitalize off the newfound popularity that Mutombo has created for himself. They’re going to re-release his signature adidas Mutombo sneaker sometime this summer.

If you don’t remember the adidas Mutombo, you’re probably not alone. Although Mutombo was a pretty popular player during his NBA career, he was never really known for his sneakers. In fact, we dare anyone out there to send us a photo of their original adidas Mutombos. But, as you can see, these have a chance to make a little bit more noise this time around. The Mutombo sneaker features an African-inspired colorway, Mutombo’s former jersey number 55, and black leather and nubuck on the upper. Curiously, they don’t feature the traditional Three Stripes that so many adidas sneakers do (unless if you count the three plastic tabs on the sides of the sneakers) but there’s so much going on here that that’s probably a good thing.

What do you think about adidas re-releasing the Mutombo sneakers? Does it feel like they’re just trying to capitalize off all the attention that he’s getting right now? Or do you think that sneakerheads will legitimately be interested in wearing these when they drop? Regardless of why they’re doing it, adidas will be re-releasing these this summer. We’ll keep you updated when we hear more about when and where they’ll be available and how much they’ll run you.

While you wait, watch Mutombo’s GEICO commercial again. Still funny, right?
