Last summer, news came to light of Lauryn Hill‘s legal drama because of her failure to pay taxes for 2005, 2006, and 2007. The former Fugees frontwoman was charged by federal prosecutors for willfully failing to file income tax returns with the IRS.

Despite facing potential time behind bars, Lauryn pled guilty to the charges, and will be sentenced later this month. In an effort to avoid a lengthy prison sentence, Lauryn’s legal team has filed papers seeking mercy on her behalf. According to TMZ:

“According to docs … Lauryn stopped paying taxes ‘when she withdrew from society at large due to what she perceived as manipulation and very real threats to herself and her family.’

She’s not specific about the threats — but it’s a new explanation for her mysterious disappearance from the music scene after her rise to fame in the ’90s.”

“Lauryn’s asking the court to consider a bunch of other factors before her sentencing — including her claim that she can pay off the debt much faster if she’s not behind bars.”

Reportedly, Lauryn is hoping she’ll get probation instead of time behind bars. Her sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 22.
