Prepare to get Carey’d away!

Carey Mulligan, the star of Baz Luhrmann‘s forthcoming adaptation of The Great Gatsby, embodies her lovestruck character Daisy Buchanan effortlessly on the May 2013 issue of Vogue. “Baz really felt very strongly that the book’s nature was quintessentially modern, that the twenties was the time when everybody came to grips with the twentieth century,” says Luhrmann’s wife and costume designer Catherine Martin of the fashion featured in the film and on Mulligan in Vogue. “It was out of the late-Edwardian summer; you have this incredibly dynamic shift where you have people earning a few dollars a week before the war suddenly getting $100 a week; you have women in the workforce in America for the first time.”

She continued, “If you think about it in terms of the neckline on dresses—strapless, one-shouldered, V-neck—whatever necklines you want to talk about they had in the 1920s. They had every silhouette of dress, from Erté, long and languid; the beginning of the bias cut; the robe de style, which was much more like the Dior New Look, with a slim bodice and a big skirt; the shift dress; the jersey dress; the shirt-maker dress—all those styles were invented in that period, or else they were synthesized and made modern.”

Wearing a lime green Oscar de la Renta velvet gown on the cover, the 27-year-old actress is dripped in jewels for the 20s-inspired fashion spread shot by famed photographer Mario Testino. Set to hit theaters on May 1o, The Great Gasby also stars Leonardo DiCaprio and features a soundtrack produced by Jay-Z. The May 2013 issue of Vogue hits newsstands on April 23. But, until then, get into Gatsby by reading more here and check out a behind-the-scenes video with Carey Mulligan below. How great do you think the movie will be?
