New Man Of Steel Trailer: More Russell Crowe, More General Zog, More Messiah Complex

Audiences received their fullest look yet at Zack Snyder‘s upcoming Superman reboot Man Of Steel this week, and it seems to layer some heavy amounts of soul searching and existential crises on top of any world-saving.

Teasers had previously offered only atmospheric voiceovers of both of Kal El/Clark Kent’s fathers- here played by Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner. And we had previously seen the images of Clark (Henry Cavill), bearded, bumming around (the Yukon?).

But now, we get a clearer picture: the baby is sent to Earth not just to save his life, but with a higher purpose in mind. And the discovery of his identity triggers a crisis that lasts into adulthood. But a sassy reporter named Lois Lane (Amy Adams) appears to uncover his secret. (Best line: “Well here, it’s an S.”) Also, an alien invasion forces Clark to show his true colors, and Michael Shannon looks as terrifying as ever as Zod.

I’m a little confused, though. I always thought that Superman’s parents mainly just wanted him off of the planet that was being destroyed. But the voiceover from this trailer suggests that they had things way more planned out, knowing that he would have super powers, and expecting him to be a sort of savior.

What do you think of the latest trailer?
