Brooks Brothers Designs An Entire Great Gatsby-Inspired Menswear Collection

The Brooks Brothers company has created a limited-edition menswear collection that is sure to suit anyone with a fancy for the roaring 1920s.

Inspired by the timeless tuxedos, suspenders, waistcoats, trousers, bow-ties and other breathtaking costumes worn by the Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Joel Edgerton in Baz Luhrmann’s forthcoming film The Great Gatsby, the capsule collection was designed in collaboration with the film’s Academy Award-winning designer Catherine Martin. The Great Gatsby‘s author, F. Scott Fitzgerald, was a lifelong Brooks Brothers customer, making the collaboration a no-brainer for Martin.

“It was this most basic and fundamental connection that has made our collaboration so authentic,” she said. “Brooks Brothers is mentioned several times in Fitzgerald’s writings as a representation of the ultimate gentleman’s purveyor of fine clothing to the American man of distinction.”

For her inspiration, Martin combed through the extensive Brooks Brothers archives to find imagery both formal and casual that exemplified 1920s style. “We drew and designed all of the male costumes and…worked with [Brooks Brothers] to develop the samples. They were sort of our manufacturing arm and also provided a lot of the background archival research,” Martin told EW. “And, very interestingly, one of the other reasons we decided to partner with [them] was that Fitzgerald had been one of their very loyal customers. He mentions Brooks Brothers numerous times in his writing and it’s usually to describe the sort of quintessentially well dressed upper class American man.”

Brooks Brothers’ Gatsby Collection is available now at over 150 Brooks Brothers stores around the world and online. Go behind-the-scenes of the collection that Brooks Bros. chief executive officer Claudio Del Vecchio says brings “F. Scott Fitzgerald’s world to life” below.

The Great Gatsby opens in theaters nationwide on May 10.
