FOX Executives Plotted To Replace Mariah Carey With Jennifer Lopez On ‘American Idol’?
A report by The Hollywood Reporter is alleging that the executives at FOX plotted to replace Mariah Carey with Jennifer Lopez on the judging panel of American Idol because of a so far disastrous twelfth season of the reality talent competition. Jennifer, who served as an AI judge the last two seasons of the show, was a hit with AI fans during her stint on the judging panel, but the same can’t be said for Mariah. Apparently, FOX was so desperate for AI to regain its footing, that they were willing to replace Mariah with Jennifer before the current season even came to an end. Allegedly, the plan was thwarted when Mariah’s camp threatened to take legal action.
In response to THR‘s story, a FOX spokesperson said, “This is just another ridiculous Idol judge rumor, likely started by talks of Jennifer performing on the finale.” Although it’s true that AI‘s producers are negotiating with Jennifer to appear on the show’s finale in May, I don’t doubt for a second that the original plan was to bring her back in and give Mariah the boot.
