Video Premiere: Ashanti Returns With “Never Should Have”
After what may have seemed like an eternity for Ashanti fans, the 32-year-old returns to the music scene with her new video for “Never Should Have,” the first single off her forthcoming new album BraveHeart.
“It’s something for women, just being empowering. This album is something very deep,” Ashanti told Rap-Up. “I’m going places that I haven’t gone on different albums.”
The follow-up to 2008′s The Declaration, BraveHeart is Ashanti’s first studio album in five years and, like the title suggests, it was inspired by the classic 1995 Mel Gibson film of the same name about the will of the underdog. It’s a sentiment Ashanti can relate to. No longer signed to The Inc., the Grammy Award-winning singer is releasing BraveHeart on her own record label, Written Entertainment.
“It’s not an even playing ground, so I feel like with the [major labels], they’re bossed up. They have the big engine and all the artists signed to them and with the indies, it’s depending,” she said. “It’s homemade, it’s homegrown. It’s a lesser engine. So the metaphor I was using was being brave and putting your blood and guts into it and fighting passionately to win.”
Watch Ashanti unleash her fighting spirit in the video for “Never Should Have,” which premiered exclusively on ETonline. BraveHeart features production from Sak Pase, Jerry Wonda, and Detail and hits stores on June 11.
